The problem

A handmade brand of baby clothes, toys and accessories needed its own online shop, built around a catalogue of handmade pieces.

What I built

A complete shop: catalogue by category, cart, checkout, a customer area with order history, shipment tracking, moderated reviews and product sharing. It is available in 5 languages and can be installed on a phone like an app.

Decisions

• Stock checked before charging. The server confirms and reserves stock and creates the order before asking Stripe for payment. In a shop of one-off pieces, this prevents selling the same item twice.
• Passwordless login. Customers can sign in with a fingerprint or face recognition (passkeys, WebAuthn).
• Emails out of the checkout path. Confirmations and notices go through a message queue (RabbitMQ) and are sent by a separate service, so the shop never waits for an email.
• Light images. Photos are compressed automatically and stored in S3-compatible storage.
• Postcodes validated locally, with a database of Portuguese postcodes, without calling external services.
• No tracking cookies or pixels.

Technology

React, Vite and Material UI on the frontend, FastAPI on the backend, MongoDB, Redis, RabbitMQ and Stripe. The shop started on Framework7 and was migrated to React.
